Prototyp : Car : Audi R8 - 25 JUL 01 : Audi R8 Evolution |
Seems the general layout of the mechanicals has not changed at all. However the cooling channels in the sidepods have been flopped. The original spec had the intercoolers outboard of the radiator while the new spec moves the intercoolers inboard, closer to the engine presumably for shorter charged-air delivery. |

The rear wing download forces are fed through the wing struts through a structure on the backside of the rear deck bodywork and to a large rear 'scuttle' leveraged off the back of the transmission. There are subtle differencese in the location of the wing struts, being set further apart on the new-spec car, but the major differences are in the chassis structure. On the 2000 spec car, this is a very expansive piece of carbon fiber with four distinct contact points. The new spec has much of the support structure moved to the underside of the rear deck which rests on the narrow protrusion while the contact points appear to just be small round elements at ends of the outer extensions. |

Undernose aerodynamic details appear to be unaltered. Certainly some things have changed downstream for the 2001 car as the sidepod/pontoon fenders now open to this underbody airflow. |

Generally the new car has the same basic profile, but nearly every body panel has been changed. Most obvious is the isolation of the front fenders as nearly separate forms and the shape of the rear deck, which looks to be sleeker and more tightly profiled to the underlying mechanicals. More subtle reshaping appears on the nose with somewhat more defined 'edges' to the outer profile of the front fenders, differently shaped headight bins, and angled leading edges. Refinements have also been made in the cockpit area, following an evolution of the form more closely wrapped around the car's mechanical systems. |
