Introduction - 1 2 |
The design process begins with thorough research, and when possible a subject will be measured and photographed in detail. Engineering concept sketches are done freehand in china-marker on large newsprint sheets; strategic details such as tabs and parts separations visualized before sitting down to work at the computer. Technical drawings are worked up in Adobe Illustrator in 1/24 scale and serve as source and reference for the model's parts. All the extrusions of flat surfaces into three-dimensional volumes are calculated and executed by hand using traditional drafting techniques. |

The paper-modeling medium is not new, its roots coming from the ancient Origami crafts of China and Japan. The ubiquity of home computers and inkjet printers along with the sharing of models online has done much to progress the paper-modeling hobby. Most Japanese corporations offer free paper models online as a promotional tool... making available models of everything from automobiles to construction equipment to endangered animals. High-quality pre-printed kits (many created in the Czech Republic) are designed and sold globally through publishers and specialty shops. For anyone with a small working space or who wishes to avoid being relegated to drafty garages or isolated building nooks, paper modeling is an ideal hobby with no fume-filled painting or gluing and working of plastic and resin. All that is necessary to build the models are some fresh Exacto blades, a metal straightedge and cutting mat, and some paper glueŠ along with patience, focus, and clean fingers. A set of markers or paints are useful for touching up the edges and corners where the paper parts meet up. If parts are damaged, new ones can be easily made or often just reprinted as needed. |

The Prototyp models are being produced in two levels of detail; the curbside "Easy" line and the hard-core, full-chassis "Full" line. Full versions are truer to the Prototyp vision with structural tubs, stressed drivelines and separate body panels while the Easy models are pure curbsides; simpler and quicker builds which also ensure a better closed-body presentation than possible with the more detailed models. Parts sheets are printed on either gloss or matte paper stock as appropriate. To maintain an international appeal, the illustrated building instructions (called "Construct") convey the parts and sub-assemblies in as language-independent a way possible with exploded-view drawings (similar to a standard plastic kit's) and a step-by-step photographic building reference on the Prototyp website. |

The eventual goal of Prototyp is a complete technical study of sports-cars in 3-d paper form capturing all aspects of the subject's mechanical and structural systems as well as the interplay between them. As Prototyp is a tremendous amount of work being produced by one individual it's not entirely surprising that the first releases come nearly two years after the project started. The efforts have been archived on the Prototyp website, prototyp.org. A massive undertaking in itself, the site completes the Prototyp vision offering models together with insight, featuring a growing model design journal, photo galleries, and in-depth studies of the full-size subjects. Free downloadable 'PROTOTYP' versions of the model designs are available as well as the full-liveried model kits for purchase at the Prototyp online store. |
