Prototyp : Model : Jaguar XJR-10 / 11 |
Process, Part Ten.
Introduction - 1 2 |
The kit design may be finished but there is still more to do. Reproduction. Stamen and pistle, birds and bees... The printing is an expensive balance of desired quality, estimating quantities, and keeping per-unit costs down. How many people will buy these models? 10? 200? I have no idea. Seems most every option is expensive, ranging from the merely painful to the massively astonishing, pushing kit per-unit costs well beyond what is resonable (would you pay $40 US for a four-page kit?). I would like to thank the very helpful folks at D&K Printing in Boulder Colorado for giving a good effort in their bid. If you need good Indigo work done, send it to them. If you've got a really good short run press (175 LS minimum, 5+ color preferred) and you'd like to bid on printing, contact me. The final product: four parts sheets plus an illustrated instruction sheet, just over 100 parts, printed with hexachromatic continuous-tone liquid inks on glossy and matte stocks as appropriate. The paper is thin, to the point of frightening experienced builders (4.9 mil matte and 6.7 mil gloss). These models were designed to hide paper edges as much as possible and to be quite rigid without needing thick paper stock. Thick paper does not make these models stronger... it just makes them look chunky and unrefined. |

The Shop deserves a reintroduction as it's had just t-shirts and such on it for a while. You can buy the models directly from the store page or view more information for each model in pop-up detail views. I expect the Shop will evolve a bit after people start to use it more (and send me feedback about its usability). I've chosen to use PayPal initially as the Prototyp payment service. This lets me keep the model prices down by not paying massive monthly banking fees, instead paying smaller service fee per transaction. Opening a PayPal account is very simple, their service is secure and widely accepted, and requires no more information than you would have to supply to me to fill the order anyway. If you have anxiety about PayPal, here is their website for more information: http://paypal.com/ And to open an international account: PayPal International Register |

And finally: Order your kits now! Go build! Be sure to let me know what you think, detailed feedback about the models can help me work to improve them. I would love to see how the models look built up, so send photos. I may even add a builder's gallery to Prototyp.org in the future. Most importantly, thank you and let the building begin. I hope you will enjoy these first models. Welcome to Prototyp. Go to the Shop > >
