The test builders

While it was easy for me to build the models, I need to make sure that another person can understand how they're meant to go together. Time for some test builders then. A couple happy volunteers were sent pdf parts sheets and given a link to the online photo building guide, Construct. Building the models up from pdfs of parts sheets, the test builders go through the building experience and point out anything amiss... quite amazing to receive photos of my model built continents away.

"This is a firstclass model with a very, very good fit. It's very challenging by its tight fit, but when done so it builds a very nice model. When finished it gives a nice representation of the real car. And I was close to that car only some weeks ago! I can promise you the model is wonderful, top of the bill, superclass, magnificent, what more can I say. Great fun to build... Very refreshing." Willem : Dordrecht

The heavy stuff (this is what's been taking so long)

Seems that everything's evolving; from model engineering to building-instructions format to Prototyp becoming a publisher as well as model designer... my feeling is that this is all good. This is growth.

One of the biggest appeals of this hobby is the availability of free models. Not so much that they are free, but that they are immediately satisfying. Click, download, print and build. And it's a beautifully international community who shares in this, as well as a bit of universal expectation for it. On the other hand, there is an industry of designers and publishers who create and distribute a great many models people enjoy.

Selling printed models a difficult decision to make (if only for the ecommerce infrastructure it necessitates), but one I think that will ensure highest quality for the builders. There is a fundamental problem with dowloadable pdf files... color and printer calibration. What looks good and detailed on one printer becomes washed out and gray on another... as my testbuilders pointed out. I think this doesn't necessarily imply that the two cannot coexist, and certainly versions of some models will be available for free download.

Next step will be to create a satisfying shop experience, building the store, and finding the best printer and papers suitable for the models. Prototyp's got a nice new logo, packages are being designed, and some 'free-download' things are being created too. Certainly with this much time invested, Prototyp will certainly not be a short-lived project! This is now, well almost, officially the beginning. Next, Process, Part Ten: The finished product > >
